Hi

not sure if this would be better in the carpentry forum or not...

I purchased my house with and extension already built in 2008, I want to remove the ceiling a vault it which would mean cutting away the ceiling joists.

Would I need a roofer to look at it to determine if additional supports are needed or a structural engineer?

thanks

SE would be needed at some stage- stick some pics up. If the roof trusses are the manufactured type (skinny timbers plated together to form lots of triangles) you'll probably need a full reroof (strip covering, felt, battens, trusses, create cut roof with purlins/steelwork/tie bars as necessary, felt, batten, retile/slate) to achieve your vaulted effect. Oh yes, and insulation between the rafters and plenty of it

You can't cut roof trusses, but you might be able to remove ceiling joists from a traditional cut roof.

Roofers tile roofs, and carpenters construct roofs. Anyway you need an engineer. And then possibly someone else to specify the other building regulations stuff if the engineer can't do that, many can't or don't.

Ok thanks, I’ll cut an inspection hole and find a structural engineer

thanks

Whatever type of roof you have, including a trussed rafter, it can be done, it just depends on how much work/expense you want to go to.
