Recommendations for generator for emergency use

... moving the central heating from a fused connection unit (FCU) to a plug and socket so it can be powered from in inverter and batteries does make some sense.
Makes lot of sense.
And once you've a plug and socket, you can use a plug in power meter to see how much the oiler used.
For power management, you could run the boiler for (say) 10 mins every half hour to heat the rads. That would make your batteries last longer.

We had a power cut last week, I have my power to my boiler via a plug. So I plugged it into a lead then in to the generator which was in the garden, as it is a heat only boiler, we had hot water and heating. I have this Honda generator that is over 20 years old

Beware though... not all generators have a suitable inverter for the sensitivity of the circuit boards in some boilers. Mine! Tried two so far, no good. I believe we need pure sine inverters?

AC generators produce sine wave output without any inverters!

Which is why it is illegal (specifically in the Electricity Act).

You must have a break-before-make changeover switch.

Special conditions apply to solar and similar inverters which must detect loss of network and close down.

much safer to simply run extension leads to your boiler and freezer, and plug them in.

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean everyone knows it is, and even if they did, it may not stop them doing it anyway. They need to know the reason why more than the legality.
