I was just wondering if you have cemented around the value and 'building in shroud' or left it open for access to the glands etc ?

I'm going to be using large tiles but even so the wall behind has a massive hole chased into it for the valve and doesnt leave much for the tile to stick to.

Cheers.

Before. Cut flush with wall surface once set, with a panel saw, which gives you a flat surface to tile to. If you need access you can dig it out. It will also hold things pretty well, and it's waterproof.
Dampen surfaces first - it sticks better and sets quicker then.

Might be worth wrapping the mixer in cling film first - if you ever do need to get it out to change the rings, that could save you having to chip off the foam bit by bit.

Cement attacks copper, Bonding soaks up lots of water.
Builders use whatever's to hand and get away with it.
