I need to put something on the dividing wall between my bungalow and next door as we can both hear noises from either side. One 'problem ' I have is that it has all been newly plastered and I have coving. The Ceilings and coving have all been painted. I suppose I am trying to say I don't want anything too thick which will protrude beyond the coving edge.

Sadly nothing that thin will help reduce noise to any useful amount.

Need new wall and possibly ceiling to block sound.
Sound blocking is all or nothing.. Its a bit like plugging a hole that's leaking water....

As above. There are no 'thin' options and beware of any product that say 'sound proof'. Its usually snake oil.
Is there a particular weak spot in the wall? Can you hear noise coming from one particular area? If its more prominent at floor level it might be an unbroken slab between properties. If its just generally through the walls it might just be rubbish old walls.

You probably need to build an independent wall lining on at least one side of the party wall i.e. timber frame hung from the ceiling joists and floor rather than attached to the wall with plasterboard lining. I would generally recommend two layers of 15mm plaster board and a mineral wool cavity fill to solve most problems but that might be overkill for your particular situation. Even that might not work if you have issues with flanking sound etc.

What are the levels of furnishing in both rooms? Do you have wooden floors and hard surfaces? You might find these build up reverberant noise levels in one or both rooms? There's a lot to be said for carpet and a F$*k load of scatter cushions!
