We bought a new build.....

We believe the front door and one internal wall are not straight how would I measure the deviations?
Is it just case of a piece of string and measuring the gap between one end and another?

Or are there easier ways?

See the NHBC standards. And be clear whether you mean wall or plaster finish.

IIRC, the standards state how the component is to be measured, and I don't think string is one of them.

and what are you going to do if it proves to be out of square?

I need to be able to prove it’s outside the NHBC deviation guidelines
