Hi all,
Thanks to Datarebal and Barthy for their advice on our Porch leak back in October. They suggested removing some tiles either side of the porch roof valley to have a look.

I eventually found a local roofer who came last week. He said it would take him two days.
He removed the pintiles about a metre up either side of the porch valley and fitted new membrane under the lead. He then replaced all the tiles but ran out of time before he could carry out pointing up each side of the valley and has had to go onto another job
He’s now said it could be a few weeks before he can return to finish my roof because of the weather but that the roof “.......should be watertight”

My missus is having kittens worrying about the roof so I wondered if I could have a go at the pointing myself.

I’d be grateful for any advice on this as roofers in my area... (Beccles, Suffolk)....are busy just now and the weather isn’t helping.

A few questions I thought of were.......

1) The tiles are “drooping” into the valley as there is no mortar bed so the edges look uneven as you look up the valley......would you pack them up with bits of tile to even them up and leave a gap for the mortar?

2) What should I bed the mortar on.........expanded mesh or cloak board.....or just on the lead

3) would you point up from bottom to top ......or top to bottom.

4) any admixture to the mortar ?

Thanks all

John

Roofer was he? Have you paid him?

You could have a two hour lunch break, watch Emmerdale on your phone and still done in a tidy fashion in a day..

Sorry its a mess , things dont look right to my eye Something is up with the gauge.. I will not mention the mortar works

He was the only one I could find............yep I was desperate.

The mortar works look like he had a blindfold on.......so I’m not that keen on having him back.

I can tidy the tiles up as some of them have just slipped down.......any tips on mortaring up the sides?

Thanks

John

It's bad mate I've see a lot of things but felt support trays in the valley is a new one
I honestly don't understand how some people draw work in that's a disgrace

LEAD-LINED VALLEY
Lead-lined valleys should be Code 4 (colour coded blue) or Code 5 (colour coded red) and supported on gutter boards of 19mm thick marine ply or as specified. Lead in valleys should be laid in lengths not exceeding 1.5m and be lapped 150mm at each length. Tiles should be cut and bedded as for valley trough tiles except that the mortar should be bedded on an undercloak (for example slate) to prevent direct contact between the lead and the mortar.
