Opening the schools in September was the biggest mistake. Nothing had changed, but the government thought it would be OK for 10 million people to mingle in confined spaces every day. It was obvious this was going to cause a surge in cases.
I think not locking down over Xmas/New Year was a gross error of judgement.
The school holidays was an obvious opportunity to lock down, Many businesses were closed anyway for a large part of that period.

Yet you still did your shop yes?
Yes, on the Monday before Xmas, and still limiting the shopping trips to once per month. Although admittedly going for bread several times a week in the local village.
But about to change that pattern of buying bread, to once a week to a supermarket, because corn bread and nut bread is available there. And it freezes just fine.

Yes. Early one we talked about how living with coronavirus might require mini lockdowns. School holidays is the perfect time for this, but the government decided against it (Starmer suggesting it probably didn't help, as Boris hates doing anything that the opposition suggest).

But, if schools were doing remote learning from September, they would have had all summer to organise this and kids education would not be so badly affected. Instead, they thought it would be OK to return kids to school, seemingly forgetting that school closure formed the first part of lockdown in March.

If the government spent more on supporting remote education, maybe more businesses would be able to stay open, and we would have had a normal Christmas.

Ultimately though, the only way to beat this virus is to vaccinate and isolate / distance until the virus has no more vulnerable bodies to infect.

It's not really bojo's fault, he's got a bit of a thankless task, he can't possibly do what's right for everyone. Him and his pals are aren't completely faultless and there have been a few cock ups,

it’s not Bojo who is to blame, .
It is the government to blame, and Bojo is the head of the government.
This government has invoked some nonsensical policies.
If you arrive in UK without a vaccine certificate you are fined £500.
I heard that 35 people arrived at Heathrow yesterday without a vaccination certificate. Sure enough, they were fined £500, and then allowed to disperse into the general population.

Well if I thought, bu99er, I have no vaccination cert, and no time to get one, (or even worse, have a positive cert', so deny the existence of any), I'm faced with a hotel bill of about £1,000 for a two week isolation (and that's dead cheap at London prices), or £500 fine. It's a no-brainer.

Australasian countries would isolate you in government provided accommodation for the same infringement.

yep, as soon as this virus started everybody entering the country should have gone into 2 week isolation. And the schools should have shut the moment those kids and teachers brought it back from Italy.
But we watched on TV how the funny foreigners were all stuck in their flats and singing songs to each other, while we carried on like nothing was wrong.
Then 100,000 Brits died. Ooops.

This 'virus' or all the new strains as well?

Because going by the history of flu, they'll be another one along next year...

And the next...

And the next...

A permanent cycle of lockdowns whether national or local through 'tiers' makes perfect sense...

And very handy for the 'great reset' whilst 'big pharma' makes a great deal of money!

Covid 19 and its various strains. Which is not the same as flu.
Maybe people will need covid 19 vaccines every year for some time, just like we have flu vaccines.

As I understand it, the variations do not stop the vaccine working, as the structure of the virus is largely the same, ie the bits that the vaccine attacks.
A bit like bleach - we don't need different bleach each time a new germ is discovered. Dettol has been killing coronavirus for years!

You really are a ray of sunshine :(

All the more reason to get vaccinated when it becomes available. Unless we just accept the virus as we do with flu, there is not other way to beat it in the long term.

All the countries that have managed to keep the virus out have just deferred the problem till a later date unless they also go down the vaccine route or choose to shut themselves off from the world.
