Hi there

I am new here but have been reading your informative posts for a few months now and I am looking to replace my shed floor in the spring, my shed is now totally empty so that I can keep an eye on any issues within seconds of putting my head in the door. I am happy with the floor being done in warmer weather but I have a lot of water doing a capillary action pattern on my wall. Am I right that the tongue and groove has given up? I am about to fit a gutter as this side of the shed gets all the run off from the roof and we live in a wet area! I have attached pics. When the interior wood is dry (it is responding well to the door being open) is there a product that anyone recommends for slapping on the interior? I reckon that this allied with a gutter will get me through to the warmer months when I can replace some tongue and groove and also put in my new plywood floor

Thanks in advance you are all very knowledgeable

Scott

You need gutters - that will go a long way to stopping the shed sides from getting wet.
IMHO it's pointless treating the inside of the shed until late summer when the wood will have dried out. Treating - Cresote is best but difficult to obtain. Next best is a wax based treatment - give that stuff a good stirring with a 'power mixer' to break up the wax globules.

It looks like shiplap

Fit gutters both sides. You can line the inside with felt or roofing membrane to prevent water penetration. Leave an air gap from the cladding so it can dry out.

What is the shed standing on?

I think the side of the shed has pretty much had it. The shed seems to be poorly situated, it's enclosed on the two sides that I can see, there is no ventilation round about it and, the damp seems to be coming up from the bottom as much as anything else.
I would get rid of all the rubbish surrounding it and, make sure it is clear of the ground so that it is well ventilated on all sides and underneath.

Thanks for your helpful replies guys. John, the shed is sitting on concrete blocks and 95x95 timber fence posts. A lot of soil has moved around but I have removed some of the original floor in readiness for an exploratory look and I have shovelled away a couple of buckets of soil. In spring I will be putting concrete bearers down and polythene before my new plywood floor goes in

Stivino you are spot on with your observations. The shed was there when I moved in 11 years ago and 10 years ago my late father replaced the other wall at the fence which looks like it was fitted this year! I am removing all the rubbish as you say. I put a new osb/felt roof on which has focused me on getting the rest done

Thanks for the help. You will be getting some wet weather too as I am also in Midlothian

Your shed looks very similar to a shed I bought from the guy in Butlerfield 20 years ago.
What direction is the bad side of the fence facing?
I see a lot of coal in your picture so, Bonnyrigg, Loanhead, Rosewell area?

With a rotten floor you're aswell to take the shed apart into the sections as it was when new - 4 walls, 2 roof pieces and a (knackered) floor.
Make a nice new floor for it then put it all back together on top. Use as much wood preserver as you can.

Yes I know Butlerfield. Ah right it must be about 20 years old like I say my Dad replaced one wall 11 years ago when we moved in. The bad side of the fence? In the pic showing the exterior, the wet side of the shed is facing North. That’s not coal in the pic, it’s wet soil that has been rotting my shed floor, all excavated out now. I am in Lasswade what about you?

I thought it was North facing, that side always comes off worst.
Actually, I'm not in Midlothian any more, I never thought to change that. I was at Gladhouse when I joined here that's why it says Midlothian but I'm just inside the boundary now, just down from Straiton.

Gutter fitted

This water inside isn’t drying out but I am just being impatient because of the wet weather!

It's north facing, it might not dry until summer. Ventilation will do more to keep it dry than your gutter as it seems to be getting wet from the bottom up.

I have since pulled out the rotten 90x90 bearers. The side nearest the fence was to my horror not sitting on concrete blocks!
I have sourced new plastic bearers which are superb
