Any advice on which latches I need please?

I've bought some 3" tubular latches for my new internal doors and door knobs, but the 3" latches put the knobs too close to the door frames (see photo below, compared to my current knobs) so I need 4" latches.

The shop I bought my 3" latches from say that 4" latches are heavy duty latches and are only for heavy door handles, and will make mine difficult to turn? So can anyone suggest some 4" latches please?

Also, can anyone explain why my door knobs are sprung on only one side? Why not the other side too? Does the sprung latch take care of the knob that isn't sprung?

What is currently inside your door? is it a mortice case?

I am perfectly happy with the yellow Altro tubular latches and bolts.

They are strong but I see nothing wrong with that.

There are not many quality brands around now. I don't think Legge are still made. I don't think Union tubular latches are as good.

The two doorknobs are attached to the same spindle, so if one is sprung, they both are. Not all doorknobs are sprung. it is more important on lever handles, which look shabby if sagging.

Thanks for the link, but the 4" tubular latches shown are all heavy duty latches. Would they be suitable for normal door knobs?

Yes, I guess that makes sense, thanks.

So I guess the door knobs are sprung, as well as the latches?
