Hello,

Is it allowed to wire a blue 16amp socket as a spur off a ring main?

Would be used for a welder

What is the reason as the 2.5mm twin and earth can supply in excess of 16amp and it it's not impossible for someone to plug in 2 2kW appliances into a double socket that is on a spur. Dispite the fact that you shouldn't.

Presumably it's because the blue 16amp plugs don't have Fuses?

It’s about the current draw and breaker capacity as well.

Ok another question then.

I want to have 2 16amp sockets in the garage so I can move the welder about. Can these both be wired as 2 separate radials from the same 16amp MCB? I know this means they both cannot be used at the same time but I'm a little stuck with space in the CU

Be aware that using a welder on a domestic supply is likely to be in breach of the contract with the DNO

They can ( and often do ) cause voltage dips in the local supply network and neighbour's complaints to the DNO can lead to an instruction to cease using the welder or risk having the supply disconnected.

Need a little more information. How is the garage supplied with power. Is there a separate MCB in the house consumer unit? What value is the MCB?
Or is it supplied from another circuit in the house, perhaps through a FCU?

It is supplied by 3 core 6mm SWA. It is connected in the house to a 40amp MCB.

The garage has a metal clad split load RCD CU

So then it is not a spur then is it, It is not on a ring 'main' Is it.

Attached to the CU fused down to 16A in the garage will be fine.
The reason for my first question was I was hoping to save on cabling by spuring it. But as you said that is not good practice I will now run it as a separate circuit
