Use bathroom fan cable for light fitting, (Ireland)

Hi All, I have an extractor fan in a bathroom that is no longer used. Can anyone advise me if I can use the power to this fan for a new light fitting I want to install? I see a positive & negative going into the fan, no earth. I assume an earth is required. If so where should the earth run to? Could it be wired up to any other earth like a socket close by?

If you are going to fit the light in the same place as the fan was then yes you can use the cable.

You will need a light that does not require an earth connection.

You cannot do any electrical work in a bathroom in the 26-Counties unless you are a Registered Electrical Contractor. Otherwise you are committing a crime and are liable to a fine not exceeding €15,000 and/or a jail sentence not exceeding three years imprisonment.

Well that's definitely not true. You can carry out "minor electrical works" as defined by the CER Decision Paper CER/13/147.

If it's the same voltage (likely to be) as the one you are installing then yes. You likely see a live and neutral (not positive & negative). An earth is not required for a plastic fitting which a light fitting often is. If your new light fittings has metal in it and does required an earth you can connect to any earth. By its nature, earth is ultimately the same connection - earth!
