Morning all.

Fitting new DHW heat exchanger at the weekend to my valiant 242e.
Before I start how much should I tighten fitting when using the fibre washers?

Careful asking such questions here.
Last time I said I took the cover off my boiler I found myself surrounded by hungry lions.
Unless you have a gas safe card.

The advice at that time and which was relative to the original posters question in that specific post was about removing the case on a boiler where the outer case creates the room seal. It was only discussed to ensure that the OP's boiler would be left safe and wouldn't have been possibly dangerous to the occupants, if there had been an issue. The reason there was a lengthy discussion was over whether the boiler in question was actually room sealed by the outer case or not, it turned out it was.

I believe the 242e's outside case is only decorative as there is an internal sealed case, though not too familiar with that model and I'm sure another pro will confirm. If not then the plate hex is located outside that sealed space and could be changed by the user.

Tightening should be as tight as you can get them with your fingers ( if the nuts are free spinning) and then a nip up, it's a 'feel' thing. Shouldn't need to be ratcheted up. If you re-pressurise and there's a weep then give it another little nip up. Just makes sure the faces of the connections are clean.

Thanks for reply.

I will give it a go at the weekend.

Are the fibre washers anything special or just the same I can buy in a hardware shop?

It did. I was only asking in case it leaked after I fitted possibly due to over tightening

That’s the plan.

hand tighten / small nip with spanner / keep an eye on them.

The regs are there for a reason, the smallest error (and I mean error with the best intentions at heart) can be (and have been) catastrophic, and that is why they are continually updated.
As something is changed to protect life and property, another danger will reveal itself...
Engineer something to be idiot proof and the world will create a better idiot!
