Hi

just brought a new house and the consumer unit was changed prior to us moving in, the cable going into the consumer unit just hang and not attached to the wall or in trunking. I have attached a picture of the old consumer unit but the cable problem is the same.

so is it a requirement for these cables to in trunking or clipped to the wall so they are just not hanging. The consumer unit is under the stairs cupboard.

advice please as one electrician has said they should be in trunking and the person who completed the job said they should not.

The cables ought to be neatly clipped to the wall. You can do it yourself if you want. I expect they will be 2.5mm and 1.5mm. Cable clips are cheap enough

As there appears to be trunking already in place, it is odd that the cables were not put inside it, but the electrician may have calculated maximum anticipated load and calculated that there were too many cables to bunch them all together.

Sometimes electricians do this, and forget that the Company Fuse will be in the region of 60A to 100A

After pictures showing what the electrician has done to make it compliant?

So the electrician has been out to rectify but is the gap of the cables going in the bottom compliant with the gaps?

The electrician is bloody rough.

I can just, just about put up with the grommet strip round the holes at the bottom, even though the strip can fall out easily.

That cable clipping to the wall is embarrassingly awful. What a mess. That should be neatly and securely clipped and/or cable tied. Or put in plastic trunking.

What a load of sh1te, if you don't mind me saying so.

It's a poor design to have one RCD doing all the lights, and another RCD doing all the sockets.

Apparently also has not upgraded the earth cable to 16mm.

So what is the correct course of action do I complain to NAPIT who he is registered with?

At a guess I would imagine inside the consumer unit will be a mess too. Can usually tell a lot by inside the cu.

Not that you necessarily need tidy work to comply with regs.

Anyone capable of that mess may not even be able to tighten wires in to terminals properly.

Far easier to give him the chance to rectify the work.

Trouble is, I don't think he can do a decent job.

These problems are so basic, he shouldn't have to be told to do them - it should be done automatically.

Tricky.
