Democracy? What kind of democracy is this?

Are there any cultural differences between the English and the Irish.
If not that would make the make the English Irish then.
You're confused between nationality and ethnicity.
English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh is their nationality.
White, European, western, (British even, possibly, although that could also be a nationality) or whatever category you want, is their ethnicity.

Some people believe that because Ireland is an Island then every one on that Island should be exactly the same.
You may be right, Foreigners often refer to those originating from UK, NI and Ireland, as English, or British.
But that is not relevant to this discussion.

GB is an Island
It's a collection of islands

but it has 3 distinct nations existing on the same Island.
Would it be acceptable to suggest that the Scots and Welsh even though they are virtually indistinguishable from the English, that they should have their national identity erased and be redefined as English just because they share an Island.
Your suggestion is nonsense.

No it didn't, Eastern Ulster belonged to the Scots for 1000's of years.
I thought you claimed that the Irish created Scotland? Which way round was it?
Did the Scots own part of Ireland, or did the Irish create Scotland?

The original colonists became a distinct identity just as the original British colonists in America became American.
An identity is different from an ethnicity, and different from a nationality.
You're interposing different terminology.
Basques can have a different identity to Spanish or French, even though they share an ethnicity and a nationality.

Poetic words from some time ago...

"People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?
People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully?

So we're different colours and we're different creeds
And different people have different needs
It's obvious you hate me though I've done nothing wrong
I've never even met you, so what could I have done?

I can't understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand"

If only everyone didn't get so uptight about the ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc of others, and saw them for the individuals that they are.

And before anyone launches into a string of accusations, I do not get uptight, and I'm not obsessed with ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc.
I get uptight about hatred, division and discrimination shown towards others for their differences.

How far does one need to look, before suggesting that the ethnicities are the same?

Don't forget to tick 'other' on your census form.
Why don't you contact the census and tell them that there are no distinct ethnicities in the UK.
LOL.
The recommended ethnic groups are:

White
  • English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British
  • Irish
