Hi all

is there such a tree that could be grown that’s tall.....but not of anything real depth?

Almost like a cardboard tree

I’d like to hide the garages in view but not lose too much of decking area.

fence is only 1.6m. Posts don’t allow for higher labels. Trellis can look tacky unless changing posts

many thanks!

Screw timber horizontally between the posts and hang "window boxes" off the rails. Plant Bamboo in the boxes/troughs.
You can lower the boxes year by year as the bamboo grows.

Bamboo is definitely an option. With proper attention you can grow things like Leylandii (preferably western red cedar though), Laurel and Yew hedges to as narrow as about foot.

That said in your case I would be tempted to 'extend' the fence with some trellis panels, whether wood or some sort of woven reed mats. You could grow something up the fence to cover them such as honeysuckle.
