I have a friend in a ex-council property. They don't know anything about DIY, so I am helping them.

I found a leak in a copper waste, it seems it is corroded from underneath. Ideally the entire section, which goes to the council main pipe needs to be change. However, that would involve breaking wall. So may be as a resolution, may be to cut a small section of copper.

I am wondering whether parts are still available?. From old copper system to newer plastic systems.

I am trying to help my friend. How do I know if a potential plumber can do the job? How can I check their competence?. One well known big plumbing firm, wanted £105 p/h (just to make an assessment), just to look at the job, to see if they can do it or not....

What part of the country are you? £105 seems a lot of money but the risk of charging nothing is , they could give advice and you could then go and get another to do the job. To get a competent plumber is a problem as there are lots of chancers out there.

I am enclosing the photo. I have marked in red, where the copper as corroded from below and is leaking. In term of size, it is similar to a bath waste (but I have no measured it).

You would need the following to make a repair:

2 rubber couplings, section of waste pipe, multi tool and screw driver.

Is the central heating condense pipe teed into this by any chance a bit further back ?

Probably, seen a few of “ours” like this.

Op - carful of the panel, could contain asbestos. McAlpine couplings would also work.

Erm. Yes.... but much further back in the plastic section.

I have a feeling I am going to learn something new.
