Summarized edit

Neighbour helped pay for my fence line some time ago, but insisted on non-concrete posts. A few of the panels recently came loose, leaning to his side. He made a unilateral decision to get this repaired at a cost of sub £500 and is asking me to contribute to the installation of support posts only installed on his side of the fence.

I have refused in order to not set a precedent of neighbour thinking he is doing me a favour when in reality he is trying to maintain his own privacy. I don't see that I am under any obligation to pay when he's made the decision to get it repaired without my agreement.

What are your thoughts?

£450 for 2 fence panels?!

I don't even know what was installed on the neighbour's fence side because I cannot see it from my side, but I guess it's mainly the labour cost associated with repairing the 1 or 2 wooden posts and then supporting / pinning "one or a few" other posts with concrete supports. I was not around when the work was done, but probably less than a morning's worth of work.

My neighbour has gone ahead and taken the unilateral decision to repair 1-2 fence panels that were slightly leaning as a result of some bad weather a few months ago but was no where near to falling over. I have refused to set a precedent and pay half the circa £450 costs he has now asked me to contribute to. The repair work included add some guess what, knee high concrete support posts ON HIS SIDE of the fence to hold the wooden posts in place. Nothing is on my side. I told him to get lost and to never make decisions on my behalf without authorising it with me first.

Leaving aside that the £450 is ridiculous - had he expected you to contribute, then he should have discussed it and agreed it with you before hand. You seem to be suggesting it is your fence, so he should not have touched it anyway, never mind got someone in to repair it.

Yes, on all counts. His argument was that I should appreciate a helpful neighbour who has taken the trouble to get it fixed. The truth of the matter is, he is simply ensuring his own privacy is upheld and being a bully. I have just ignored his several text message, where he is now asking me to resend my response because he thinks he accidently deleted it. lol

He can't do work without consulting you and ask for money later.
That's your fence, even though he's paid for it.
Thank you very much for buying me a fence.
Tell him in no uncertain terms that you won't be paying.
The trees matter is a different subject.
