Damaged wiring

Although you haven't used a proper tester to confirm anything, doesn't your test with that long piece of wire prove it is a neutral fault?

I agree with Sunray and John that the best of course of action is to resolve the actual problem, which may well be a bad joint under the floor.

I did ask the other day if there were any connectors blocks behind the light switch (in case by some miracle there is a neutral feed there tucked away)- the video didn't really show us very clearly. I thought I could just about see something that resembled a connector block - but I could be completely wrong about that.

My sincere apologies I'd seen post#32 about not having a long enough piece of wire but completely missed posts #38 & #39. I've editted that part out of my last

We're quits now - I didn't read something in another thread just now, ha ha.

Get a room you two.
I've got news....
I've just unplugged the borrowed neutral and restored the light fitting with its own neutral. Not sure why I even did this, but when I flicked the switch, it worked!!!
I'm gobsmacked.

There's only 2 things that I did different when installing it back together again...
1) I used a longer screw to fasten the switch to the wall.
2) I pulled the blue neutral wire a few inches out of the outer plastic housing to check for any damage (I couldn't see any).

I have a hypothesis which fits in with what you said earlier sparkwright, about ES lamp holder failures....
To connect the borrowed neutral i had to dismantle and remantle the ES lamp holder.
Its possible I repaired something in doing so.

It wouldn't be a huge expense to buy a two wire tester and check the supply where the wires attach to the ES lamp holder.

You need to confirm a consistent reliable connection.
