How sturdy are acrylic baths?

How sturdy are modern acrylic baths, generally? I'm planning a bathroom revamp and I need a shorter bath to fit in the space, but so far all the ones I've found that will fit are acrylic. I've had acrylic baths before that felt very flimsy and flexed a lot, but do newer and better quality baths have this problem? The bath would need to accommodate a 20 stone person.

They come in 3mm,5mm &8mm thick if memory serves. obs the 8mm one's would be the most rigid.

Could you not use a steel one if you're concerned about acrylic flexing.

I haven't been able to find a steel one the right size. New ones all seem to be a bit too long for the space.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

You can get a Carronite bath, which is very thick and strong, and available in a wide range of lengths.

1. How much shorter than a standard 1,700 mm bath do you need?
2. If its only a few mm, consider channelling out the wall(s) to suit.

1600 is the maximum. I'd like to leave enough room to put up some boxing so that I can have the taps and shower head wall mounted, which there isn't a way to do at present because the walls at either end are brick or an oddly thin affair (looks like the interior of a cheap door from the top) that doesn't have any hollow space in it. Whether this idea is feasible or not is the next question...

This

Carronite baths are utterly stable, even for my 25 stone standing in one!

John's right.... Carronite very tough. But no bath is any good unless its fitted correctly.

Who's fitting the bath?

Ah, I have been looking in the wrong places. The usual DIY places only had acrylic ones that I could see in that size.

@JimCrow I will hire someone to do the work. The person I have in mind came to have a look last year but of course everything went on hold, and in the meantime I've decided that I should look into something a little more extensive than the straight replacement that I originally thought was the limit of the budget. However, at the time he said that we could buy the fixtures & fittings we want. I've had a quote from a place that does everything from design to installation and found that the choices were limited and more expensive.

Depending on how long a delay there is before I can get someone booked in and what the final design is, I might try and do some of the easy stuff myself. I can do the flooring and maybe some of the tiling, but I don't have the tools or experience to do the plumbing and bath installation. Depending on how feasible my boxing idea is, I might be able to do that, too.
