i had a texecom external pir which was ok not great, it did not always clock movement at furthest reach but sadly its died, power to unit but does not register movement. tried rest still not joy. Only 2 years old.

It was average at best i would describe, (and not cheap £60 i believe) only there to register movement over a 10m gap between buildings. I have it on a silent zone so does not have to be perfectly accurate but handy to detect people at night basically.

would beams be better? ive tried searches but nothing conclusive and were quite old so assumed there may be a newer product.

reluctant to buy another based on its poor ability and lifespan, it was supposed to be good for upto 12m...

Any recommendations?

Many thanks Joe

What is the Texecom pir ?
Used the Texecom TD external pir for years even beta tested the first version with no issues what so ever..
Other external detectors you could look at are Optex or Pyronix

at 2 years old it is probably under warranty.

as for distance depends on set up with the TD.

I’ve got a few TD ‘s out there been ok ....got a optex vx402 across the drive been spot on with no false alarms , I believe it’s a been replaced with the new Vx series , and a set of optex beams across the garage doors ...

believe it was the AFQ-0001, (aka TD) perhaps i was unlucky, to be fair it was sun facing and never got false alarms due to this?

it went in the bin yesterday so no warranty claims, i did carefully check and set the distance as per the instructions and the turn dial underneath.

looked at the optex beam sensors the look quite steep, normally used alert electrical which were very reasonable on rest of telecom stuff.

maybe i should just replace it after all?

Optex have been doing external pir for years, yes expensive but do the job.
Nothing wrong with Texecom external pir neither.,but things can fail?
All depends on requirement and setup.

I also have a beam across my garage door, it's been there 10 years and no issues. It does need to be firmly mounted, with a reflector fixed at the far end and alignment is quite critical.

Obviously, mounted height is important - too low down and it would trigger with cats. My beam is set to the height of my towball - which prevents my roller door closing unless the car is clear of the door. I also have a remote LED, mounted in my garage, visible through the windscreen which lights up once the car is in far enough.
