That does not make sense.

What then would you call the people who plan and carry out a conspiracy (e.g. a conspiracy of silence)?
I didnt know you could carry out a conspiracy -I thought thats the whole point -they arent real.

If they are carried out they are real aren't they? Have you never heard of people being found guilty of conspiracy to defraud for example.

Yup, sooey et al. have ruined it for everyone else. They believe in everything so provide cover for actual conspiracies.

Yes, true.

Perhaps the word (conspiracist) has been misused so often that it is now confused - like so many.
Nope, as far as I know that's always been the use of it. Mirriam-webater thinks it was first used in 1975 and for that use.

It's not an elegant word, but it is a Scrabble worthy one.

My understanding is the same as yours. Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators, or conspiracists, conspired to blow up the Houses of Parliament, their plot was a conspiracy.

But a 'conspiracy' as we tend to use the word on here is an 'untruth' rather than a 'plot', so maybe there is a dual meaning.

Also, things change, one day, everybody will be saying 'would of'.
