I used to compete in trials and use tubes with greatly reduced tyre pressures, so not really a consideration.

Doesn't really affect my racing 600s either, think Formula1, land speed record trials & aviation probably consider them, mebbe some of the serious drag racers as well.
I used to do 4x4 trials but someone told me that for fully modified 2WD car trialing they use tubes and poprivetted the tyres to the rims so they could run with very little air pressure.

Yes, but it will be considerably longer than the shelf, or the building the shelf is in.
