Fitting a Washing machine

B

Bodd

I got a call to a flat a few weeks back.
The washing machine was leaking and needed replacing.
I replaced the cold W/M valve and capped it off.

I warned thd fella not to pay for the installation with a new W/M as they will do anything to get out of fitting it...

I got a call this afternoon that the delivery/installation men could not take the cap off the valve as it was to tight...

if they have tools it would be easy to remove I said....

They have no tools (not given any)

Would I come over to do it and I'll give you a couple of quid....

No

My minimum charge is £75...

I'd be really píssed off if was him.

They only agree to fit it if they can simply screw the hose onto an existing outlet which is available.
My mate put some gaffer tape around his because the valve was leaking very slightly. They refused to fit it because it meant taking the gaffer tape off and it shouldn't have been there. They used the excuse they didn't want blaming for any leak for taking the tape off.
At one time I would have said you couldn't make it up. These days this type of scenario seems to be very commonplace.

Curry's, aO.com and so on charge around £45. Undercutting me by maybe half... the last thing I'm going to do is go and do their job for them.

Back in the day I worked for the local leccy board, when the delivery spark was off one of us used to fill in, we would deliver cookers, connect em up, remove old one, same with washing machines, storage heaters no extra charge all part of the service

I think it's alot to put on the delivery drivers. Lugging a W/M up a few stairs is hard enough then taking the old one away.

But I'm not doing their job for them....

He called me back and said they had 30 drops.. these companies take the pıss out of their workers.

S'cuse my ignorance, I'm no plumber. But why cap the valve? Why not just turn it off?

That's a fair question.

The valve is in a cupboard under the sink. When Tennant puts and takes things out of the cupboard he may knock it open..

Ballafix valves can actually turn themselves on. I cap all valves not in use. If it were a gas valve I'd be legally bound to blank off a valve.

We ordered a new washing machine a couple of weeks ago from a main Home goods supplier and paid for recycle of old machine ,
They turned up refused to put the item indoors and refused to take away old machine because it was not outside,
The firm had issued new instructions due to Covid regulations to delivery men that they were not allowed into a property .
Checked on the Suppliers website there was no mention of this new ruling , I rang the firm up and was told this was a new policy due to covid regulations
How would an elderly person or single mum cope with that sort of situation . Without a wheely hand cart .
