Hi

So i've investigated my lighting upstairs - basically it appears to be a loop at the switch installation - which means bar one ceiling rose the rest all only have one cable which runs to the switch and the other to the bulb holder.

At the switch there are 2 live wires in com and 1 brown wire in 1 way and the blues wires are just terminated - off course there are earths but lets not worry about them

I also know which is my last light switch and also one ceiling rose appears to have the 1st feed from the consumer unit as it has an additional wire and is right above where consumer unit is downstairs so would make sense too

Thats the background - now my question is where should i look to get the power for putting a switch and light in the loft

1) Will be too hard to run cable to switch and back into loft to keep switch loop

2) Can i take it from the ceiling rose which has the additional wire so i just add my neutral, live and earth and sort of create a split of the loop - [See wiring in picture]

3) Can i take the power from the other ceiling rose - i feel if i do this, if the light i take cable from is off the loft light won't work unless i put this light on too

4) do i trace the loop wire from switches somehow - not sure how - and put in a junction box and split

For me it seems like 2 or 4 is best option with 2 being possibly the easiest

Some guidance and help be appreciated - i'm not an electrician but read around and watched some stuff to workout the above

If there is a permanent live at ceiling rose ( option 2 ) then take a feed from there( together with a neutral and earth obviously). You need to know if the "extra" wire there is actually a permanent live ,what does it connect to at the rose ,can you show pics ??

The bathroom fan switch probably has a live. Is that easy to access ?

Or you could run it off the hall light via a switch which would ensure you dont forget to turn it off (kind of)

Image included i did do a diagram above but noticed actually there is an additional live and neutral - i'm not sure how i'd tell if it's permanent live but out of the lights on the upper floor this is the only one wired like this

With regards to bathroom fan switch - there is a standard light switch when you turn on it turns the light and fan on and then above the door there is another switch - quite big - which you can turn the fan off so if the light is on the fan does not run - is that the one you are referring to that should be easy access

What should i check in switch to see if it has a Live ?

So from hall rose ceiling - which means hall light has to be on for the loft light to function ? off course there will be a switch either way in loft to turn light on and off - i think you mean if i forget to turn off it will only ever run when hall light is on

Yeah the big fan switch high up.
99% sure it will be a good place to use

That rose looks a good place too.

So what ever is easier or closer

The rose in your pic has permanent live ,neutral and earth. So you can pic up your supply there. The three brown conductors in the centre terminal block ,one of which is live supply in.

Thanks Terry and Andy -

Terry - would i just drop cable and you can see a spare neutral and live slot in the ceiling rose - just wire from there and off course only one place for earth - run that to a switch or pull cord and from there to the light ? - Just trying to get it all worked out before i get into loft

Thanks

Run a twin and earth cable into the rose ,connect earth conductor to the existing earth's ,neutral to the neutrals ,and live to the "loop"terminal that has the 3 brown lives. Take the other end to a switch ,and from switch to the light fitting in loft.
Just in case you don't know ,only the live conductor would connect to the switches terminals on a standard one way light switch.
