It’s back again. Think I’ll give it a try this time, nothing to lose. I’m only going to spend a quid to get the mot on our old stinky diesel Golf. Not due until October but you have to buy something, anything, before 19th April, book it by 21 May and have the MOT done before the 21st November. Should be fun!

I think they do it every year. I’ve never bothered but I might this year just for the fun of it. Nothing to lose but my time and I’ve got loads of that spare for the foreseeable future.

I had one 2 years ago. They passed it. even though 3 tyres were right on the limit, Put a few adviseries, one of which was one of the dust covers was torn but not allowing water in. 2 mot's elsewhere since and no one has said anything about it and I couldnt see it when I took the wheel off.

Well, I've bought a total of two quids worth from them in two separate purchases qualifying me for two free mot's - one for the Golf and one for the A3. I’ll report back at the end of the year with details of how I got on with them. Should be fun if they fail. :)

Will you tell the 15 year old MOT tester what you do/did for a living? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

He'll be asking what you think.

Well, obviously I’ll be checking them over first but there are things I can’t do now I have no access to certain equipment such as headlamp alignment, emissions or brake testing so we'll see whether they try to 'ave me over. :cautious: Oh, and I’ll demand to watch the test being done as they must allow you to. Worse case, I’ve lost a quid.

Pretty sure with Covid they can now refuse to let you view now if they cannot (or say they cannot) provide a (Covid) safe viewing area.

Well, they won’t be going for test until October/November so hopefully things would be a bit better by then. Fingers crossed!

My friend (old girl) was told she needed brake pads and discs, 4 tyres and windscreen wipers.
I had changed all her brakes 2 days prior, tyres had 3k miles on them (6 months) and the wipers had been deliberately damaged.
I went down there, told them I was reporting them for fraud and they immediately passed the car, fitted new wipers and gave her £100 voucher.
They claimed there had been a mixed up with another car same model and colour.
Strangely I had heard this excuse before...
Thieves.

I take my car to an independent that doesn't do repairs and don't sell even bulbs.
No incentive to fail you.

my daughter went in for 1 tyre and they said ALL 4 needed replacement , i told her to tell them to NOT do anything and leave, as i had checked the treads on the tyres the previous week, and 3 where fine 4mm on , but 1 was on the wear mark, 2mm and I mentioned she should be thinking of changing.....
When she told them and offered to get the manager to speak to me, while she got on to trading standards , they backed down and apologised and did 1 tyre at at a very reduced price !!!!!!!
This was many years ago, when she was around 20 , but still quite assertive and has always stood up for her rights, early coaching from a young age.......

Trouble with MOTS now is , its an immediate fail and recorded, and at one time the DVLA even had a note about this , that it was illegal to drive away !!!!!! Now changed to advisory
I used to drive in upto 1 month before MOT due and if it failed, I could still use the OLD certificate while sorting the failing items out , many years ago , even the garages thought that , until it all got automated.
The MOT only really tells the status on that day , not 11mths 28days later !!

Please note, you can redeem your voucher until 21st May 2021. The last available date you are able to have your free MOT carried out is 21st November 2021.

Same here.

MOTs are their main business, they have 3 bays going most of the time. Have known couple of the testers since early 90s, which is a good sign because they keep their staff for years and most are older, time-served blokes. Not a pimply youth in sight. They will only really fail you if it's serious/dangerous. Been taking my van there since 2007 and never failed - just occasional advisory or two. My van is a rare one, because it's old and still gets looked after. Once when the lights were out of adjustment they did it for me before handing the van back. Was happy to get beams adjusted for the price of a couple of drinks for tester. Not many places like this in this day and age.

My first ever MOT, way back and I had forgotten to get it done at home - I was holidaying in Scotland and took it into a run down garage in a tiny village. Just the one bay for a car, with a pit and doors wide open. Me across the far side of the road, I saw him put a twist in one of the rack dust covers and thought nothing more, until I got the fail certificate with twisted dust cover marked on it. I reached under, straightened it and said 'do you mean this one - I saw you deliberately twist it out of line. He issued a pass with out another word.

For the last 30 or so years I have taken my car to a local guy who only does MOT's and I happily pay the full price for him to do it. I have usually done a very thorough pre-MOT myself, before he gets hold of it. Anything I have doubts about, I point out to him for his professional opinion, to consider for future repairs. Anything he spots himself, he mentions and points out, MOT related or not. It never fails MOT's.
