What sort of internet bandwidth download speed are you getting and are you rural or urban?

I can say this now without any fear of retribution, but if you bought your first PC from PC World in the 90's & it was a Packard Bell with an internal modem, then you had a built in 'back door' that gave a few fledgling hackers a glimpse into your private little world.

When we smashed their little syndicate apart we discovered some very interesting things about some very important people. They'd been collecting VAST amounts of info, but they'd pulled out a lot of info from users that they'd recognised the names of . . . . This is a bigger story than the tabloids phone hacking scandal, yet strangely it gets no coverage at all . . . . .

They move the DSLAM modules from the telephone exchange to cabinets in the street and connect them the the copper phone lines there instead of at the exchange. The data to and from the DSLAMs is take to and from the exchange on optical fibre cables. The improvement is the ADSL doesn't have to travel over long copper loops that were never designed to carry data in the ADSL format

DSLAMs are the units that add the ADSL signals to the copper phone lines

They have upgraded the exchange which is why I now get around the 10mb mark instead of 6mb.
Open Reach are looking at Fibre but our lines were put in in the late 1950's ,part overhead and part trenched ,not in conduit so whole lot will need redoing.
 
198mbps down, 4mbps up. Up is usually better than that. I'm with Virgin up to 200mbps service. What I've noticed since installing a VPN is the performance sometimes dips significantly, however a disconnect/reconnect of the VPN usually sorts it.

Urban area.

Don't worry too much about it Regan - most of it's just names but the principles are fairly simple - these numbers are just to indicate how fast your connection. A bit like in plumbing Regan where if you've got a fat pipe it's going to be able to carry much more water than if you've got a tiny thin pipe

VPN takes slows down your bandwidth as some of the bandwidth is used in the encryption and decryption process. Which VPN have you got diyfun? One of the best VPN services in the world is IVPN in terms of being most trusted

The thing with these broadband speed testers is they assume the user knows what the feck they're doing. I've done speed tests in the past and when I get the results I think - great, so what does that mean? The tests give no indication if the result is good, bad or indifferent. How am I meant to know? (n)

I'll stick to pipes and cars.
 
@ReganAndCarter thank goodness I am not alone! I did 2 tests with different sites.

TestMyNet gave me a download speed of 5.1Mbps and an upload speed of 1.1Mbps

Broadband Checker from Which gave me a download speed of 2.3Mbps and an upload of 0.7Mbps

I live in the countryside so don't expect to get superfast speeds. Compared to others on here my gerbil seems to be turning his wheel very slowly, however, to me it seems quite good. Most things seem to appear quite instantly to be honest.
 
I get around 30mbs. On outskirts of town.

That was my rural internet speed up until a few years ago
