Then more likely they are not perfectly aligned with the hole in the latch. It's not a question of tightening or loosening.

If you take the handle off one side only, it will allow more play for the spindle to turn freely, and you can look to see if it is central and straight.

It's also possible the spindle is binding on the hole in the door, but this is less common because the mistake is so obvious during fitting.

You can also get latches with a stronger spring.
