Outdoor varnishing

Hi

Going to be stencilling a concrete patio using masonry paint but I want to seal it it once that's done so it can be cleaned and also to make sure that the paint doesn't get chipped, scuffed and marked.

What would be a suitable varnish or sealant to use to give that protection, but also ideally 1. It wouldn't yellow and 2. It wouldnt be a shiny finish.

All thoughts and advice welcome.

You will need this acrylic concrete sealer to seal the concrete, but not sure what effect it will have on the paint. Presumably ok if paint soaks into concrete but not if it sits on top of it. Might be better if you used concrete dye instead of paint.

I'd not thought concrete sealant would work only because I've already painted the concrete, hence any concrete sealant applied wouldn't be in contact with that surface.

The masonry paint I'm using (Johnstone's Smooth Masonry Stormshield, an acrylic resin based paint) adheres REALLY well to bricks, mortar, and concrete, but it's obviously not intended to be walked on and is a Matt finish so it would show scuffs etc v easily.

I guess I'm thinking more about what can 'bond' with the paint I've applied, and protect the painted surface. What varnish or sealant would bond with the paint I guess - or it's going to be a formulation that would be compatible.

You said "you were going to" not that you already had, with the extra information you now give what I suggested is not suitable as the thinners in the sealer will soften & probably smear the paint if you apply it over the top.
The only other thing I can think of that might protect your stencilling would be a water based sealer such as one of these water based sealer for concrete but it would need repeating at least every year & I'm not sure how it would wear.

Did you apply a primer first ?

I've not done it yet, but definitely haven't ruled out using a concrete primer.

It's what I put on top of the painted layer that I'll be applying, over the top of the concrete / concrete+primer, that I need to be sure to choose a varnish / sealant product with all the necessary ability to bond with that painted layer, to seal against scuffs and marks, allow a bit of cleaning, and not go yellow.
