Hi, I just wondered if there was such a thing as a garden architect? Basically, someone who can look at the whole out the outside, group levels, retaining walls to put together a plan of action for creating a good outdoor space that works and complies with regs etc.

The reason I ask is because I don't know where to start in order to get levels and the outside sorted. Any tips/advice would be great please. Or, do people just tend to piece ideas together from Pinterest and other social media places?

What you are looking for is a landscape gardener.

Not many regs to worry about unless you do something extreme, apart from Part P (electrics).

Planning is the one to watch out for, regarding height of fences/decking etc

Thanks. The problem I've found is that landscape gardeners don't seem to look at the whole area. They just seem to look at the patio or driveway in isolation and not the whole area. I wondered if there was a trade that would look at and charge for plans rather than wanting to take the work on themselves.

Yeah, garden rescue on telly or Charlie Dimmock. Charlie used to run a garden centre in Romsey years ago, not sure if she is still there.

Yeah I love that show and wondered if there would be someone local who would do a plan like they do on that show. Basically they would look from the very front my property to the very back and put together a plan and idea of what can work and what levels I should be aiming to achieve.

Ahhhh brilliant, thanks! Yes that sounds exactly like what I need. By the looks of it, the one you've linked too is pretty local to me too!

Ah good, I hope it works out.

I know a bit about it as many years ago I worked for a garden designer....he offered design only service and design and landscaping.

Garden design is a subset of landscape architecture. I would expect a landscape architect to be capable of designing a domestic garden, but I wouldn't hire a garden designer to oversee the building of King Abdullah International Gardens [to take an extreme example].
