Hi, any recommendations for what to use on top of old oil paint for external door / window frames? Gave it a good rub down and a clean, and did try some WB hybrid paint, but it didnt adhere great- seemed to slip. Think the best thing is to put solvent based on (either satin or gloss), but not sure if I need to undercoat first.

Cheers

The ONLY water-based paint I would use on exterior woodwork is Sadolin Superdec, available in gloss or satin. Sand all surfaces all over. You don't use a separate undercoat or primer, this stuff does it all. It's quick drying too. You will need two or three coat, depending on what you are trying to cover - so touch up just the bare or really dark parts before you start properly.

Oil-based, there are many brands of satin or gloss. I have been impressed by Dulux Weathershield. I recommend aluminium wood primer on bare wood. It's a silver colour, so a bit of a pain to cover, but it does seem to work on areas that are prone to flake to reveal the bare wood repeatedly. You will need to undercoat as well as top coat. Again, sanding is essential for a long lasting finish.

If you are going to use OB gloss you definitely need to use undercoat first. The UC can be either WB or OB.I personally would use an OB U/C. If you don't use UC, the gloss is unlikely to pass the finger nail scratch test.

With regards to brands- I generally use the OB versions of Dulux Trade Weathershield- note- if it doesn't have the word Trade on the tin, it is the inferior retail version.
