1.2 TSI Skoda twin cam. £800 dealership cost for cam belt, water pump and tensioner. I can buy the parts for £100. Are there any tutorial videos? I have done belt changes before but only single cam. I consider myself a good home mechanic but feel a bit dubious about this job. Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks.

I agree that most people do seem to recommend the Gates belts.

Whilst I would probably do the job for myself, I would be very wary on how to align the angle of each cam. Bad enough on single cams!

Surely once the cam sprockets are aligned for belt removal, they can locked into position?

Did an PD ATD engine belt back in 2017 (now due again) and both the crank and cam have locking facility albeit its a single cam engine.
 
Always best to use a kosher locking kit on these- no real need to slacken the cam wheels but the real fun starts when you find the crank pinion isn't keyed in place :eek:

I have a 1.4 A3 with a similar, if not the same, setup and when I get round to changing my belt, I’ll just be using the crank setting pin and locking the cams with my adjustable sprocket holding tool. I won’t be changing the water pump either as it’s not driven directly by the cam belt.

The early XUD's were supposed to have a hole drilled in the flywheel, corresponding with another behind the starter motor so a peg could be inserted.
Twice I found that such a hole didn't exist so ended up with a geared quadrant that engaged with the ring gear.
According to Citroen, some of the engines manufactured outside France came this way.
For me, its multiple dabs of paint all over the place.

I have no experience with this VW motor but I agree it should be doable.
Those crank pulley Ribe bolts are made from plasticene though so get it right first time :eek:

I've always stuck a little Tippex mark on the old cam belt and cam/crank teeth as a reference to transfer to the new belt...foolproof.
 
I don't know if its suitable for a 1.2 TSI Skoda twin cam but there's this tool kit.

Pricey I know but timing belt kit + the tool kit < £800.

By the way, also investigate which, if any, of the bolts/fasteners removed are one time use - they should be replaced with new.

How did we manage before all these locking kits...I don't even bother looking for the marks.
