Gable overhang too big for dry verge?

Hi,

The roof overhang at the gable end of my parents house is closer to 100mm than the 50mm that I believe is standard. The mortar bed is now cracking and falling away in big chunks.

My mum has been advised that it’s not possible to replace the mortar with a dry verge without a complete re-roof because of the excessive overhang - I presume because of the difficulty of mechanically fixing to the roof batons and perhaps a gap underneath??

Grateful for any wisdom or links to help me understand whether reseating the tiles on mortar is the best solution or whether dry verge should be possible irrespective of the large overhang? Does it sounds reasonable to suggest a reroof in the circumstances? (The roof is c.40 years old so might be reaching the end of it’s life in 10-15 years).

thanks for any advice.

Add some more material to the barge board - or is it a cut brick gable?

You could always cut the tile...

Thanks, I’m afraid I don’t know what a cut brick gable is.

Also wasn’t sure how easy it would be to remove and cut every last tile. A lot less work than a re-roof though I should think.

Thanks

That’s was our assumption but finding someone to do it is proving very difficult. Thanks for your input, we will plough on looking for someone.
