Very slow startup.

Agree with the suggestions so far:
- Reduce the number of programs running at start-up to the absolute bare minimum. Just search 'Startup apps' from your Windows taskbar.
- Ditch AVG. It's overkill and bloated. Windows 10's own protection paired with regular Malwarebytes scans and common sense is plenty
- And best of all, install an SSD. This will make all the difference in the world and is the single best thing you can do. Don't try to copy anything other than personal files like photos, videos, documents etc from the old drive - just install a fresh copy of Windows on the SSD, copy over your files via USB/external hard drive, install the minimum software you need then format the old drive to be used as storage.

If you can't do the last one, try formatting the drive and reinstalling windows after you've taken a copy all your personal files.

Hey OP.. (Agile)...
Can you let us know:
i) Make & model number of the laptops so we know what hardware specs we're dealing with
ii) What you use your laptops for... internet browsing, docs/spreadsheets, streaming Netflix, photo archiving/editing, syncing with your personal surveillance and tracking device (aka smartfone), online MMO gaming, etc, etc

What you use the laptop/s for (ie YOUR requirements) will allow for more suitable suggestions than to just throw money at ageing kit... you wouldn't put Pirelli's on a £500 car to give you better handling when you pop to local supermarket would ya!

..and there are several ways of skinning a cat... ;)

PS.. as has already been mentioned.. remove any other 'free version' anti-virus programs.. (AVG, Avast, et al) as they will cause considerable slowdown. For the first time ever the built-in Windows Defender (Win-10) does what it says on the tin and even the tech-press are giving the thumbs-up.

I'm just going to share my very recent experience with my laptop and maybe it would be beneficial to others.
I had the same problem as the op.
Tried all the suggested solutions.
Then i reset to factory settings and went better, but soon, with other programs installed it went wrong again.
My friend came gave me an old sata hard drive and suggested i looked online on how to replace it.
It was pretty easy, a dozen screws, no particular tools needed.
I loaded a fresh os from a usb stick and everything worked fine.
After using it like this for a few days I decided it was fixed.
So I bought a 1TB ssd hard disk and installed it.
Laptop is running very fast and boots in less than 20 seconds.
Found out ssd drives are faster than traditional ones.
I'm no expert at all, in fact, I know very little about computers, so if I can do it with a little guidance, anybody can .
Hopefully you fix your laptop too.

Ditto the SSD advice.
However, have you ever had Kaspersky on it?
It seemed to set a startup delay until it had done it's business, took me ages to track down and remove.

I had the same years ago when Norton was the thing to have...

Now I run no anti virus software and just rely on the Microsoft built in thingy

Thought occurs... we have 2 laptops that can and need to be improved... and nothing to lose.. soo

Transfer important stuff (docs, pix, etc) from Lappy_1 to Lappy_2

On Lap_1 install a windows-esque version of Linux - from ongoing Win>Lin transition experience I would suggest MXLinux, Zorin_lite, which are both 'windowsy', or Lubuntu. All will run very well on a 10yr old lappy, and will run faster than when they were new running Win-XP.

Then... for a few weeks experiment with Lappy_1 running on Linux alongside Lappy_2 running Windows

Without question an SSD will improve performance on anything... but this way you can try before you buy.
Keep your options open... run Linux on Lappy_1 with a HDD, get an SDD for Lappy_2 running Win10.
See how you get on...
You will be astonished at how fast Linux runs on old kit.. I got a house full of it..

I don't buy into the idea of my hardware being made obsolete because the 'new' OS be it Microsoft/Apple have bloated it with features that are of no use to me.

Reduce the OS, Reuse the hardware. If it still does what you need it to do.. give yourself a pat on the back.

> I have got Win10, I just dont use it... Win7 does what I need it to do
