I knew when I was setting it out that the whole planter was going to be pain and suffering. Maximum 8 courses high (ouch back-ache) and only two straight (line-able) walls. A majority of those 2k bricks were on the curve and all laid by me. My oppo ducked out.Should have got a brickie in
Prices for materials are all from big name suppliers off the internet last night dude. I'd be interested in what you think is unrealistic. Price for the skip is from a local company we used whilst getting building work done last year. Maybe you're not looking hard enough for a good price?
Maybe I'm missing something? £80 difference in a skip is not making a big dent in the price though?

Fair enough! I'm not after someone to do it for a fraction of the cost. Just after an estimate of the cost from people in the know.
I've gone back over all the prices making sure I included delivery and can get
200 7N blocks, 200kg of cement and a bulk bag of sand delivered from B&Q for £400
I can get 10 bags of k-rend delivered from huws gray for £172
I've less idea on concrete but it seems £200 for 2m3 is a reasonable estimate.
Let's say I'm unlucky and the skip firm i used last year isn't available so I have to pay top whack £200 + VAT = £240
That comes to £1012.
And about a week's labour for two people which at £200 a day is £2000.
So £3000.
Which is £1000 less than I've been quoted and £2000 less than the first estimate on here.
Where have I gone wrong here, genuinely??!

Perhaps as mentioned they just don't want to do it. The render will probably be cracking and stained within a year or so anyway.
To be fair you asked how much should I have been quoted as I’m not happy with my quote, without telling us what the quote was. Yes you’re probably spot on with your material costs, but seeing as you’re not DIYing it that’s a bit irrelevant - it costs as much as whoever’s quoting decides they want to charge, which is more “how much can I get away with quoting” particularly if they’re not desperate for the job. Get more quotes, that’s the only way. Or DIY it, apart from the render. You seem to have a decent idea of what’s involved.
Base coat render, beading, digger hire, grab truck for soil, minimum concrete delivery volume, barrow boy/pump costs, damp proofing, vat, delivery costs, engineering blocks for below dpc... i could go on.
Right now we're getting somewhere!
Base coat K-rend about the same again? so that's another £170

Mini digger for a day £100 - not entirely sure necessary for these size holes.
Why do i need extra soil removal when it can go in either the planter or the skip??
2m3 is above minimum concrete delivery. Barrow boys would be 2 already onsite plus me plus lets give someone £50 to help get it done quickly.
Damp proofing ~ £100 ??
Pallet of engineering bricks £220 - surely waay more than required.
Delivery already costs covered, VAT already covered.
So now we're up to £1750 materials. Consumer prices.
Please go on. My quote is sounding more reasonable now but £5000+ still sounds crazy.

Yeah i did suspect this might be the case, that's why I'm just after a sanity check. Easy answer is to get another quote, i made the mistake of thinking asking on here would be simpler!!
Ah cool, yes I thought i wasn't million miles off with the materials. I can't really afford the time to be making the mistakes i know i will make or i'd be up for giving some of it a go, not afraid of hard work! Was just after a sanity check on here for the quote. Sorry didn't mean to sound rude just thought £5000 seemed unjustifiable - I'm no good at brickwork but I'm good at adding up numbers!
I'm good at both and I still can't fathom why UK residents believe they will have a pristine Mediterranean style planter after a few seasons.
