I’m trying to swap out the room thermostat in my gf’s flat. She’s got an old analogue thing and I wanted to replace it with a digital programmable one. I bought her the same type as I have at home, and wired it up the same way as I have at home. Nothing - completely dead.

when I reconnect the old thermostat, that seems to be dead now too, which is a worry

I had to drill into her plaster wall a bit to get a rawlplug in (to hold the pattress). It crossed my mind that I might have damaged the wiring when I did that, but I can see where the cable goes back into the wall and I don’t think I have. Sadly I forgot to bring a test meter with me.

can anyone advise please? Not sure what to do next.

thank you

Depends how it's wired at the boiler. The colours mean nothing.

Hi Show us a better pic of no.2 so we can be sure which cables are in which holes, it's not obvious at the moment.

ah - can’t take photo just now but yes it’s not obvious. But

blue into N
red into L
yellow into L1

same as I have in my own place

OK just wanted to be sure that red was in third hole. Yel in 4

Not sure her old stat even had a Neutral, Im sure if it had it would have been on terminal 4
What you have i think is a Live, N/O and N/C

EDIT
Apologies, Satchwell use Terminal 4 and I wrongly assumed yours did too

If you have it connected as in post on. 5 then as has been asked is the programmer/ timer calling for heat? ie. Set to perm on or 24hrs.

Thanks everyone for your replies - I’m very grateful as always. I checked the timer next to the boiler and to my surprise it was set to “off”. GF tells me she always has it set to “on” and that she hasn’t changed it. However I turned the electrics off before fiddling with any wires so I’m assuming that when I turned it back on again, the timer reset itself to a default “off”. This would explain why her old thermostat no longer works.

I’ll put the old thermostat back on tomorrow and check that it still works now that the timer is “on” (I’ve had a couple of beers now and alcohol & electricity really don’t mix well!). My best guess is that the new thermostat is faulty. I’ll be able to check this on Monday - I’ll take it home and see if it works in my place.
