Hello

I am planning for an extension later on the year. Some plants will need lifting out of the way. Ideally I would like to return them afterwards.

Each plant is part of a hedge. They are pruned to approx 1.5m high.

What normally happens? I was thinking of asking the builder to lift each plant in a full digger bucket. This should leave plenty of root ball. The plants could be kept in large builders buckets until ready to be re planted.

What do you think? Likely to succeed and worth the effort? What is normally done with plants adjacent to an excavation?
Thanks

What normally happens is the plants get ripped out and buried/burnt on a bonfire/skip etc!
You might be better off moving them by hand at your own leisure.
Maybe post a photo to show what they are?

If you are not starting work for some time then I would suggest either digging a trench around your plants, if they are large, or just inserting the spade around the plant to sever any long roots. This will allow the plant to form a strong root ball and repair any damaged roots before you completely lift it. Of course the size of the root ball will be dependent upon the type of plant.
When you lift the plants you will have to replant them in a temporary bed until you are ready to move them to their final position.

Just for clarification please note that I am not a gardener but I have used this technique before and had a reasonable level of success but did not save every plant. Good luck.

Thanks both. It's only privet and other greenery so it sounds like it might be easier to start again with new plants.
