Hi everyone hope you are all well.

Just looking for a bit of advice. We recently bought a new cooker hood from a large UK supplier, but when it arrived it had a Schuko plug (it’s bulky and L-shaped, I think maybe “type f”). What is the best thing to do in the situation? We contacted the retailer who said the manufacturer advised we get an electrician to swap out the plugs. Is this our responsibility? Happy to do so if that’s the case, just don’t want to invalidate any warranty!

Thank you

It has been said many times on these forums that cutting a plug off does not invalid the warranty.

It has also been stated that it is illegal to sell a product in the UK with a foreign plug on it.

It is up to the retailer to fix it not you. If you want to make an example of him go to trading standards.

Thank you so much for your reply winston1, I will get back on to them and ask them to sort it out

The other issue you may have in this situation is them having to sort it usually results in them refunding you and saying go elsewhere instead of actually getting you the correct product

Until we left the EU it was not illegal to supply items with Shuko plugs as it was perfectly acceptable to use accessories compliant with any member states wiring regulations.

I don't know how acceptale existing accessories are now as they could have been fitted when we were a member.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that ever was the case - as had been said, I think that UK legislation has always required (ever since it required plugs to be fitted) that anything sold in the UK had to be fitted with a BS1363 plug (even if it was one of those 'convertaplug' thingies).

Kind Regards, John

this is exactly what they suggested. The manufacturer says it’s apparently not illegal because the manual says it has that type of plug. I haven’t seen that in the manual and how would I know this before purchase? Additionally the retailer says I should find someone because it’s not a service they offer

I think that's nonsense. Part II of the relevant UK legislation ("The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994" - click here ) includes, amongst everything else ...
The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 said:
Quite apart from anything else in the legislation, that (b) [the requirement for the plug to contain a BS1362 fuse] precludes anything other than a 'standard' (BS1363) 13A UK plug.

Can you wire a plug or know someone who can? Just fit a new plug and be done with it.

I can, I was just a little weary initially because I didn’t know if there were any warranty issues. Oh well, I think I’ll just fit a new plug on it :)

Do you even have a socket nearby to plug this thing in?

Some cooker hood arrangements have a junction box (typically fed from a switched FCU unit somewhere) that you would wire into.

I have an extension lead with a European plug on one
end and a UK socket on the other so she can plug her hairdryer in when we are abroad.

I am sure Amazon (there are other retailers) will have convertors

We have a socket in the wall specifically for the cooker hood, it was mapped into the kitchen design. It will have to be a plug we use rather than junction box arrangement

I think an adapter will be good but I’m not sure which is a reputable place. I looked on TLC but they didn’t seem to carry it online
