Hi,

The plastic bath panel was loose for years i.e. had some gaps with no sealant. I took that for granted not realising how much of a problem it would be later on. It seems when the shower was used some of the shower spray run down the side and was soaking up some of the joists of the wood frame.

i manged to take the panel off yesterday out of curiosity as it was warping just to see if i can fix it properly. anyway got a shock.

Attaching a relevant picture of the wood frame joist that seems most affected.

* I have a mini steam cleaner at home - can i use this to spray onto that wood joist and scrape off some of the mould/gunk sitting on the surface of this small joist?

I’d be tempted to cut it all out and replace it. I don’t think just cleaning it will do - it may need some wet rot treatment or something on it. .

oh :) Grateful for the feedback but i think that will be beyond my limited DIY.... I'm think of giving it a clean to buy me some time then i might need to call someone. I have a dehumidifier. Is it worth me putting that on in the bathroom and leaving it to run several hours in the daytime?

Nope, the damage is done unfortunately, needs the framing replaced then find out where the water is seeping through and sort that.

is the musty smell ok for health (till I can sort the permanent solution)...just thinking of rest of the family and kids etc.... as I now have the side panel off and we can now smell that damp

I’d be careful of mould spores - that can give breathing problems.

btw would it be a plumber or a handyman for this type of job? i.e. who would be cheaper for me
