Is the May 17th reopening a mistake?

Great, as long as all kids are thick and socially inept, that's fine then.

Schools are already putting measures in place to help kids catch up, and for some people, social interactions were a rare thing for much of the year - I grew up in the sticks miles from where any school mates lived. I turned out OK o_O

Anyway, some kids are probably better equipped for the real work thanks to covid - many people go off to work to sit at a desk in front of a computer and communicate by email, text and video calls - this is pretty much what kids have been doing. Maybe not a terrible thing that they have learnt these skills.

They don't really know how effective the vaccines will be in practice. Lockdown has got infections down dramatically and vaccination has been ongoing through a lot of it so information is dribbling in really. There have been comments that info on Pf is more solid than AZ due to it being used earlier on. The 5 weekly lock down updates are so that they can forecast ahead really before reducing them again. They will gain the info they need as more and more get infected.

There is no point in being scared of it or the vaccine. It makes sense to still try and avoid catching it what ever happens and in the case of the vaccine known risks with it which are dubious are far outweighed by probabilities if some one catches covid. Not just death. As they have said some vaccinated people will die when and if they catch covid. Some will need serious hospital treatment.

There is still no indication if boosters will be needed. I do know they are monitoring some for antibodies but haven't seen any results. The ones I have seen have been based on results from blood donors. They give an idea of levels in a population but not how long they last. They just keep saying maybe to boosters later in the year. Odd really because if they are needed we could be in the same situation again. Not much point in finding out we are when we already are or even getting to that point.

People voted for the Tories because they wanted a government comprised of corrupt, incompetent liars.

All the ****-ups which have happened and will happen are the expression of the democratic will.

Ellal, you never talk about the vaccine in context.
The risk is not vaccine versus no vaccine
The risk is vaccine versus risk of Covid and variants.

"let's see what happens to the jabbed ones"......well aren't you lucky, it's those jabbed ones that are massively reducing your risk of getting Covid.
And I thank those 'jabbed ones' for being the guinea pigs

But let us look at the latest information...

"Adults are more likely to report mild and moderate side-effects after mixing doses of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer Covid vaccines, a study indicates.
Chills, headaches and muscle pain were reported more frequently when different vaccine doses were combined."

Now can you tell us what the long term health outcomes will be due to this medical experiment?

Of course you can't, because rigorous testing hasn't been done!

Lots of people have those with any of the vaccines.
Sounds like it's an improvement actually - no mention of tiredness or feeling some what off such as mildly dehydrated.

Then how did they combine doses?

Also of course forgetting why the vaccines were available a lot sooner than usual. They were produced much more quickly than they usually are. That aspect often takes a long time. Testing in real terms is no different to what it would usually be done with others. They need to come up with it in the first place. Then establish that it's unlikely to harm people. Then seek volunteers who are prepared to take it. If that proves ok offer to more people and watch what happens. In covids case there is plenty of people to test it on, it's active so results come in quickly. Still ok - offer it to the wider population. All vaccines can have unfortunate effects on very low numbers of people - just like most medications of any type.

Why do people get headaches etc. In some respects due to their immune system being active. Some of the curious effects are purely down to that.

AZ and clots. The Norwegians tried to look at how many occur naturally. It varies so they used and average. Result - there may be an association with the vaccine. It's a tricky area as some people may be more prone to it - there are theories about that. It's a bit like the main test results. The people and their chance of catching covid are random events that can't be controlled. This is why they would even be interested in vaccines that showed just 50% effectiveness. Now millions have had them the results in terms of effectiveness will be far more reliable.

Flu vaccines - they eventually found a way of weakening a variety of flu virus. Different ones need to be used each year.

Smallpox - anecdotally some found that that puss from some one who had it could give people immunity. Like covid it didn't kill everybody. Eventually they noticed that milkmaids didn't catch it - read people who spend time with cows so the vaccine is based on cowpox.

AZ - based on a virus that gives chimps a cold and doesn't do much at all to humans. Genetically modified to cause our immune system to react in the right way. Impossible when other vaccines were developed.

Pf - totally artificial. The same technique has been in use for some time now to try and defeat cancer and similar. There was a breakthrough not all that long ago in the area of delivering it more effectively.

All of them are intended to get our immune system to respond in the right way. Part of the reason for people feeling ill when they have viral infections is the fact that the immune system is active. Same with some of the side effects from vaccines. Some peoples immune system works more effectively than others - especially the very young. Some people's remain more like that for longer than others. It's why kids tend to recover more quickly than adults.

Last but not least. If you haven't caught it already there is a sporting chance that you will in the future. Risks from the vaccine runs at 10's in millions. Covid risk is way way higher right down the age range. It's not just death. Hence the shear number of people in need of treatment for after effects.

For some people, the worst side effect of the covid vaccine is another 20 years with her indoors!

One obvious health outcome is that they will be unlikely to contract Covid.
That'll do for me.
On the other hand, the latest...

'There is zero evidence for this': Scientists suggest booster shots may not be needed

"While COVID-19 vaccine developers are making ever bolder assertions that the world will need yearly booster shots, or new vaccines to tackle concerning coronavirus variants, some scientists are questioning whether such shots will be needed.

More than a dozen influential infectious disease and vaccine development experts have said there is growing evidence that a first round of global vaccinations may offer enduring protection against the virus and its most worrisome variants discovered to date.

Some of these scientists expressed concern that public expectations around boosters are being set by pharmaceutical executives rather than health specialists,"

I guess it depends on which view you believe in or your individual intelligence to question the evidence instead of going along with what you are simply told to believe and not make up your own mind!

For most people it's a question of this

Fortunately for most of us, most people are taking their chances with the vaccine.

Those that don't have the vaccine might be in for a nasty shock when restrictions are eased.

I'll take my chances for the moment...

Because unlike some others I still have the ability of independent thought :)

Yeah, I think you said that already. No need to keep telling us. As somebody else mentioned, we are all capable of independent thought, just happens most people come to the conclusion that getting the vaccine is the right thing to do. Let's hope you have made the right decision, the second year of this pandemic could still be worse than the first.
