A cumbersome long thread title, but says it all really!

buying a house that’s the untinkered version of the one next door.

when I find an architect (any around Surrey/SW london you can recommend) should I just get him to copy the floor plan?? .

also would involve building along the party wall line... any pointers on that?

The extension and it's layout should be done to what works for you. However copying the form of existing is likely to get it through planning easier.

How you attach to their wall I don't know someone usually woody will be along soon

Go onto the local council website and find the neighbours plans - that'll prob have the architects details on it.

How about finding someone to design what you actually want, and not just a copy of what someone else wanted?

that’s a good point. All I’m really looking for is to give the kids more space, and to add a granny annex within the building. Is that an easy one, planning wise?

What you should do is get someone around, tell them what you want and a few other details like budget, and they should then tell you what you can have in terms of planning, building regulations and other constraints, and how to achieve it.

Things you can do yourself...

Make a list of what changes and spaces you'd like to create/ merge with existing
Measure the footprint the other guy added
Graph paper/sketchup software
Make drawings of plans however implausible
Get pro to look at and improve on it so you get what you want.
