Hi all,

What shelf runners do you recommend?

I'm looking for runners for a shelf that will hold a crate of wine, so potentially up to 19kg. The crate will be sideways on - so the shelf will be long (500mm) and shallow (330mm). I love blum's movento runners on drawers, but the downside (aside from cost) is the extra space they take up on the underside. Space is a consideration, so I'm probably looking at runners that are screwed to the side of the shelf and therefore visible - unlike the moventos. It would be good to extend out as far as poss, but smooth running movement is preferable over length of extension.

My past experience with ball bearing type side-fixed runners like this is that they are great for extension, but aren't that smooth to pull out.

Do you have any recommendations?

I'm trying to emulate this kind of look albeit on a much smaller scale:

Thanks - unfortunately like the blum movento, the tandems require some space beneath the shelf/draw. I'm pretty limited on space, so need one that fixes (mostly) to the sides rather than the underside.

The hafel drawer runners are good also.

Providing you get ball bearing drawer runners you won't have any issues with smoothness.

Blum are very good but as you say not available in the style you need.

Try this firm, items I've bought in the past have been pretty good, the help and how to guides are useful aswell

Those Eurofitdirect prices are hugely lower than the klugs.

I was about to hit buy, but then realised there's a problem. My shelf is going to be just a sheet of timber - presumably 19mm (not yet decided on the species or even veneered mdf).

The problem with the ball bearing ones is that they all need to be screwed in from the side. So my failure point will not be the runner, but the point of fixing, which might start a split (unless it's MDF in which case it will definitely split)

Bother. Perhaps I'm going to have to go with those old school roller runners - the really basic ones like these. Because they wrap round underneath to support underneath and I'll be able to fix upwards from the underside. I won't get full extension, but perhaps they won't be tooo nasty/shaky/clunky/unsmooth/hard to keep in one position, will they?

Is your limitation just vertical?

If horizontal space is not tight, what about making each shelf basically a front-less drawer, and spreading the load by using 2 runners each side?

Cheeky thought - do you live within striking distance of Rayleigh, Essex? :sneaky:

No - other side of London. Why what were you thinking?

Ha! That's a blinding idea. Shame I'm not in that area. I think that's actually the website where my photo above comes from!
