We have drawn a blank.

We removed the 'cover' but it won't go up far enough to allow us to get a spanner into the nut. We have tried unscrewing the screw on the top but it won't move even after penetrating oil and WD40.

We have run out of ideas, can anyone help. Thanks in advance.

New tap is looking the most likely option.

It should just lift off once the screw is removed but they do sometimes get stuck with crud and/or corrosion. You could try persuading it with force. A rubber mallet tapping upwards on the tap head prongs sometimes works. A hammer would damage the chrome finish but if you can get it off, you should be able to replace the valves and head with a tap reviver kit.

Elkato, thanks for your reply. The screw definitely seems unremovable, the screwdriver is starting to chew the slot up. I'll try upwards force to the prongs and see how I get on.

If the screw won't move you will probably have to drill it out. Use a drill bit for metal. Anything bigger than about 5mm should be ok and drill into the head of the screw. You won't need to go too deep. Just deep enough that you get rid of the screw head. That should free up the tap head but you are going to need the tap revivers rather than just a washer.

Or get new taps.

May be too late but don't use a pozi screwdriver on a stuck Philips head! Easy to confuse Pz and Ph.
