Customers have experience.

Boiler packs up. Experienced repair man says it is the PCB, new PCB fitted. Fault still there, Must be the fan, new fan fitted, fault still there. another PCB fitted Fault cleared.

The original fault was a short circuit in the fan which put 230 volts onto the control lines from the PCB, this fried the PCB, new PCB is then fried as the fan is still faulty. Replacing the fan does not get the boiler working because the PCB is fried.

Sometimes experience is not enough. Not wide enough to cover all possibilities.

In this case the manufacturers reimbursed the customer for the repair costs.

It's a simple case of "Buyer's Regret".

Engineer knows cause.
Supplies new PCB and fits.
Fault cleared, Problem solved.

OP then speaks to a mate/relative/neighbour: "£250 for a new PCB!! You've been robbed pal/son/Jim. I got one for my boiler off ebay, £40, fitted it myself. Got one for the wife's PC and did that too. Piece of pi$$. You could saved a fortune!"

How many threads have we had on here, where poster has decided a new PCB was needed, bought one of the interweb, fitted it and fault persists!

Wait till you need a pcb for a grant combo oil boiler the factory whwere they’re made has gone up In smoke they’re like rocking horse crap to get hold of now and by the way grants throw pcb s for a hobby. Bob

Some people have a bad day and some are better than others, in all walks of life. It doesn't mean that there is necessarily anything funny or fraudulent going on.

The OP got the correct repair done at a reasonable price yet somehow it has been suggested the repairer is at it and deliberately caused the failure.
 
I had f61 error on my boiler a few years ago and it was down to a PCB fault. £250 sounds entirely reasonable for someone to fix the problem.

In terms of the actual fault on my old PCB it was a common issue of the switch mode power supply output electrolytic capacitors having failed. The DC output had become so uneven you could even see the backlight on the programmer flickering. With capacitors being cheap components to replace its probably why there are many refurb boards on ebay, but would you really trust a repaired board bought off ebay.... I wouldnt.

True, I recently spent some time on what appeared to be a faulty micro-processor based data logging system. I should have checked the power supply to the various sensors before assuming it was the data logger at fault. All channels were showing suspect values so it had to be the data logger.. didn't it ? nine sensors do not all go wrong at the same time. Unless the power supply to them has become faulty.
 
What is reasonably about £250 for a PCB worth less than £30? As I said earlier boiler PCB prices are astronomical. But it is not the fitters at fault, it is the manufacturer.

Its not £250 for the PCB in this case though, that was the price including fitting by a RGI.

No one has claimed the manufacturing cost against selling cost is reasonable. Given the fitter has to buy it, the overall cost to the customer was reasonable.
 
Since the wireless thermostat lost communication then I wonder if the transmitter unit battery was replaced or discussed during the service?

They really need a good quality alkaline brand like Duracell.

I always discuss them with the client at a service.
 
The lad simply turned the fused spur off to replace the PCB , and forgot to re bind the receiver and stat when he turned the power back on, we have all done it, easy mistake to do
