Scud (slurry) coat on red brick wall

Hi All

I applied a scud coat (2:1 sand/cement) to a small portion of a red brick wall but found I could quite easily scrape it off when it had dried. Is this the correct approach when rendering red brick walls? Also, should I apply a pva/water mix first.

What about bonding, would this work?

Sbr slurry coat

Thanks for that lostinthelight. So it's 1 part sbr, 1 part water and 5 parts cement and apply scratch coat before slurry dries. Does this give enough time to do a 3m by 3m wall (in hot weather) or would you have to do it in sections? I've never used sbr before.

It may be wrong cos Im not a pro but I mix roughly 1:1 cement to sand with the sbr to what looks the right consistacy and leave 24hours then neat Sbr and render when tacky. Thats for sand/cement rendering.
Be sure to clean up before it sets especially if you wear glasses or its nearly on there for good

Cheers. I had looked it up on Google and thats the manufacturer's suggestion. The ratio of cement does seem a lot though - and with no sand??? It is a sand & cement render. I think your suggestion makes more sense. Anyone else care to chime in?
