Timber prices?

The UK construction sector consumes roughly 5 million cubic metres of softwood each year. But despite an abundance of forests and woodland, a staggering 80% of it comes from abroad, and Britain remains the world's third-largest net importer of forest products, after China and Japan

  • Sweden (42%), Latvia (16%) and Finland (14%) provided the majority of imports of sawn softwood to the UK.
I thought Canada may of been higher in that list.

Selective quoting only undermines your argument - costs have gone up.

Tariffs might be zero but goods require export docs as well as meeting regulations both in the uk and EU - the non tariff barriers are always left out of the discussion.

Despite this trade agreement, Timber Trade Federation importer members still must complete import procedures and due diligence when importing timber from the EU.

The first step all our members should take is to assess their EU purchases, identify the products involved, and understand how these changes will affect them. While we note there are a few circumstances where other companies may be responsible for these new procedures, as detailed below, these instances are very limited.

VAT and excise procedures will need to be applied to goods traded with the EU, in the same way that already applies for goods traded outside of the EU, and new due diligence requirements are now in place as a result of the adoption of UK Timber Regulations, with many timber businesses trading in the customs union who were previously classed as ‘Traders’ to become ‘Operators’.

So, basically you’re saying that there’s a form or two to fill out but it’s too hard for them to do it? Perhaps they should get out of the industry if they can’t fill forms in. Just a suggestion..…..

its not they cant do it -it is that it costs money and time

Also UK now has a haulage problem -I used to get timber delivered from Germany and the drivers were mostly Eastern European, Hungarian etc. But now lots of EU haulage companies wont deliver to the UK, brexit means the delays make it not worth their while.

By the way, I ran a SME -I ordered form Germany because it was so easy, as easy as ordering from UK supplier. Not anymore, it is too much aggro for most small businesses to deal with customs stuff

So making stuff up again as usual. Not only is there more documentation, there are more checks, that slows things down. This all effects the supply chain.

What do you splash on in the morning? Eau de Bojo Balls?

But, according to someone who hasn't a clue - its just a bloody form.

A form that needs to be completed and then checked and processed all adds up as a consignment needs to make sure all docs are in order. So why take the risk of one document holding up the shipment.

It doesn't matter to Brexxers.

Yeah, we don’t want that timber going off. Just best to not bother eh?

To be fair, you do get charged "rental fess" if your consignment is held up at customs. I was only importing two pallets at most and a day or two of a hold up wasn't massively expensive. When looking at a consignment of timber a tiny error on the form might run in to hundreds or thousands of pounds.

If it was me, I’d try my hardest not to do that but if I did, I wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Would you?

We used to import/distribute pet supplements from a company in the USA. Once we cleared vet/customs, we had no problems sending them to other firms in the EU. The onus was on us to ensure that all of the paper work was in order though rather than the US supplier. We as the importer paid for any delays. The Americans were very hands off, we paid them in dollars and we were expected to arrange shipping/clearance ourselves.

I don't know how the timber industry works. I suspect that EU suppliers shipping in to the UK are expected to provide a door to door service, in which case they have to deal with the paperwork and any associated costs.

When I purchase kit from the states the price includes landed shipping costs

any vat or duty applicable is paid in the UK prior to arriving at my address in
