Hi
I am trying to find some studs behind plasterboard.

These are studs, in between the studs is plasterboard and the joins are taped with that foil tape. I have just been testing it and i cannot seem to easily be able to find the studs

Is this normally that difficult? Is there a decent stud detector out there that would find these?

Buy a neodymium magnet, 10 or 15mm cube works well. That will find the screws holding the plasterboard to the studs.

'Hover' the magnet just above the surface with your fingers, because they are nickel plated and nickel can draw on the walls and leave what looks like pencil marks. (or wrap it in a post-it note first)

Or go for broke and buy a dedicated one, I have one of these.

I opened up a very dead old hard disk drive from an old computer, the magnets in those are quite powerful. I had an extremely old 20Mb drive, the magnets in that were about 15x20x30 can barely separate two of them! They find the scews very easily, even behind a thick skim coat. I can even feel the screws behind the 38mm fibreboard put in as extra insulation recently, but it wont hang off those though.

I know, but these days I am lazy on the spelling, easily a 50-70lb pull on each one. In newer drives that are much smaller they do not need so much magnet any more!
