Is it a problem?

Hi All,

My consumer units lighting circuits appear to not be RCD protected, which I believe is highly recommended in this day and age.

Would the whole unit need to be replaced, or, can the “switches” or “ways” be swapped round for RCD?

This is not something I will be doing myself, but keen to educate myself prior to asking for quotes.

You could get your electrician to make alterations but realistically the existing unit doesn't comply with regs as they currently read and the amount of additional work involved to change it to a new unit is minimal

Yes, the two lighting MCBs could be changed for RCBOs. That would solve the RCD issue. But MK have stopped making consumer units now, and the unit itself is not made of a non-combustible material, so you maybe faced with a swop out in the future anyway.

AIUI honeywell (owners of MK) licensed the MK brand for consumer units to the company that had already been manufacturing the units for them. So you can still get MK branded devices and i'm pretty sure they are still compatible.

2 rcbos at maybe £20 each wouldn’t brEak the bank if the spark wanted to install them.
Average price (including VAT) for 6A MK RCBOs is £30 each. Add two of those and you still don’t have a fully compliant board.
And you are getting near the cost of a fully loaded Fusebox CU.

The logic used to be have the lighting on the main switch side as if the rcd activated you would still have lighting to see.
