We have the following light fitting in our attic - as you can see we have the wires coming in from a covered rectangular section and a lightbulb coming down from the circular fitting.

We want to replace this but I'm unsure as to whether I can simply buy a lampshade to cover the lightbulb (not even sure it would fit around the lightbulb?) or could easily take the circular fitting off the ceiling and replace it completely with a new light fixture. Having said this, I'm not sure what type of light fixture I'd need to fit straight onto the ceiling with the wires coming in from the side - is there anything I could search for for this?

Thanks for any help you can give.

That fitting is missing a shroud ,the metal part shouldn't be visible. Is the ceiling flat or at an angle ??
It's a bayonet ,batten light fitting by the way .

For your google search It is called a "Batten Lamp Holder".
Lots here from diffrent manufacturers.

I would be worried that the metal is on show - it could be live.

A Lamp shade can be fitted to it - but not realy made for this type of lamp holder as it too close to ceiling.

To do this you need the missing part of the batten.
The flat metal 'o' ring of the shade goes over the black section in your image.
And then the missing white section clamps teh o ring in place.
And then you re-fit the bulb.

Thanks. So I would need to buy a new Batten Lamp Holder with the missing part and then Google for options for 'Batten Lamp Holder Lamp Shade' to see what the possible options are?

You might find that you can use missing part from the new battin holder and not fit the whole batten.

Google for options for 'Batten Lamp Holder Lamp Shade'
Yes - but must be said I have had a quick look and cannot see any suitable shades with that seach - simply becuase the ones I saw the o ring is recessed into the shade and so the edge of the shade would hit the ceiling.

It is one of those things that I would go to B&M Home store or Homebase and have a look at the shades and see what would fit.

The first of these fit - (you can see the o ring) but do not diffuse the light

For a reason that I cannot explain - That one looks dangerous (cheap chinese plastic and base looks wrong).
It is also not actaully sold by Amazon, but by a re-seller.

Can you get to Screwfix, or toolstation, or B&Q, or Homebase?
All of these will sell the 'real' and 'safe' items.

You need a Home Office Shield, Google Hager Home Office Shield. Cost pence.. There are dozens of shades that will fit a standard Batten holder.

Thanks. In terms of the Batten Lamp Holder do you think this one would do the trick? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07PY82PKK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3UHOK2TXTJED4&psc=1

I Hate those sort of batten fittings where its own at the back and the ceiling forms part of the enclosure, just a bit cheap and nasty and a pain to fit. You are best off with one with a base similar to a rose/pendant... on that note, how high is the ceiling, enough room to swap to a pendant? you lamp shade might look less daft if you do

Whether you replace it with the same or fit a ceiling rose, you could tidy it up by adding a base.
I assume they must have forced the cable up into the ceiling somehow to access the rear, so they could screw the cover on

As for the missing shroud you can fit a shade using one of these

If anything like normal lampholders, not always a standard thread, unfortunately

Not sure that was there intended use is it, originally designed i quess to fit a Besa box, seem to recall a thin plastic plate that they mounted on for normal ceiling mount.
As you say there a pain to fit especially the silly live loop in terminal.

the HO skirt is good, but I have sometimes had fancy bulbs that will not fit. I don't think the current generation of LED lamps are bad for that, but take a look at the placing of the bulge where the electronics pack goes.
