Spark Generator location in oven?.

Hello all, just to make my week even worse our Hotpoint oven has stopped sparking on the button.

Are there any websites with parts diagrams for appliances and does anybody have an idea where the spark generator would be?.

Will have to take it to bits when I get home from work.

Please do not attempt this unless you can carry out critical safety checks afterwards, as this would be deemed gas work. Are you sure it’s not just a switch that’s been accidentally knocked off?

Do the hobs "spark" or are they also non functional ?

If the hobs are not sparking then check that all the spark electrodes ( boths hobs and oven ) are clean.

Debris on a spark electrode can short out the spark energy from the spark generator and thus no sparks are created..

Mother-in-laws spark generator was battery powered on her cooker, just needed a new battery, once we had found its location! The previous battery has lasted many years.

There is no spark at all.

Button appears to be functional I check it when I take it to bits.

I'll check all the electrodes.

Ours hooks up to the mains but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a battery somewhere.

Modle number has rubbed off the front but there's a sticker on the back iirc.

It's not deemed gas work so don't worry about that !
Cbw is completely wrong.

It's probably mounted on the back of the cooker under one of the cover panels.

Very easily. It's an electrical fault gas doesn't go through any of the components involved.

The ignition of a burner is not deemed safety critical ( I don't agree with this by the way and argued with gas safe over the issue recently ).
The HSE stance is if gas doesn't go through it the the gas regs don't apply.
Many years ago I didn't agree with the stance of Corgi at the time nor the HSE in the end I spoke to someone who put the gas regs together. I argued about the definition of 'fittings' and 'work' as used in the gas regs. My argument was how can someone 'work' on a gas appliance without been registered and comply with leaving it in a safe condition as stated in the regs if they weren't registered.
The argument was specifically about electricians working on a boiler to wire in the controls.

Essentially the chap that put the regs together said some poor sod will cause a problem by doing something like this and then there will be a legal precedent set.

Get this one !!! an open vented Andrews water heater had been illegally and wrongly converted in to an unvented cylinder ( a gas burner in it can you imagine it !!! ) when I phoned Gas Safe not interested because it was on the water side ! So it wasn't a gas issue. I dont make the rules up but there you have it.

Managed to remove it and a genuine replacement is on the way for £25.

Tested the button and all good there, checked the electrodes and couldn't find a short.

Ironically out of the 10 screws that hold the back panel on half the holes were stripped, so I'll have to sort that out. Must have been a numpty at the factory as no-one's been inside it from new.

All done and back together, I noticed it had the Live and Neutral fitted wrong way round originally on Spark Generator (from factory!) but being AC I suppose it doesn't really matter..
