Hello,

Im trying to lay a sub base down and ive ordered quarried MOT type one. It looks different to what i expected. Is this right?

I was going to compact it and lay more on top as im not quite level yet.

Thanks

Ben

I am definitely no expert, but a Google image search for 'MOT type 1 sub base' shows just what you got! :)

Hahah i hope so, i just expected it to be much finer and less rocky

Not sure it will matter, get it compacted and all should be well, I had a delivery like this, from memory meant to be 40 to dust... more like 100 to dust

That said it compacted a treat and is very solid.

Nice one...im probably going to need some more on top anyway once compacted so il try request finer if possible unless it doesnt matter.

Are you renting a proper compactor? If so you’ll be surprised when you’ve been over it a few times, it will come up smooth.

Yeah, hoping to rent one out next week...i really appreciate you getting back to me. It has been on my mind..

Would you order quarried again or would recycled be better? For the sake of £5 im happy to pay quarried if worth it.

Probably quarried, as recycled could mean there is all sorts of crushed bits in it... that said if it’s for a shed/summer house, doesn’t really matter.

If you are going to put more on top, try to compact the first layer before you add more it just makes the compacting easier.

Get some ear muffs... not the fluffy ones!

Haha i got some yesterday.

I messed up in that i didnt put a membrane underneath it.

I see on some youtube videos that some put one down and some dont. Can be confusing.

Its a slightly sloped area 7m x 4m.

I want to lay a small patio on a third of it and fake grass on the rest.

I see i can membrane over the grano dust/sand for the artificial grass but didnt put anything under the mot for the patio area.

FWIW I wouldn’t have put a membrane under for the patio section. Not saying this is correct, but tightly compacted you should be ok.

suppose you could lob one down before the next compacted layer goes down.

I had a couple of lorry loads when I did my driveway. It was recycled and generally pretty good. There were a few parts of the load that were a bit short of finer stuff, funnily enough the yard sells something called concrete dust so I had a tonne of that which I spread over and wacked in to fill the voids.

Agree with Woody here. Did patio last year and while most of it was smooth, there were a few bits where the 'dust' was absent after compacting. It ate a fair amount of sand before being 'full'. I did leave the sand in the sun and it was powder dry mind.
